Prepared for Ryan Anderson and his coaching colleagues at the IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion to increase student engagement in their wellness coaching program

Hello and welcome, IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion!

This is Your First Look at your Recommendation Report and since we wanted you to have a brief overview first, we pulled out the report's executive summary, key findings from the local study and polling research, and a brief list of recommendations and put them here. You can also click to view your in-depth recommendation list or your full report by clicking on the underlined section.

The executive summary provides a general look into the writing project. If you were not aware of the project, read this first to get some background on the project; but, if you knew about the project, take a look at some the data in the key findings section or read the brief recommendations section to get an overview of your next steps.

Executive Summary

The IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion is searching for ways to increase student engagement in their wellness coaching program. They have agreed to work with this group of IUPUI students to research what avenues can be utilized to increase student engagement. The IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion specifically wanted to learn more about how the office could:

  • identify what students need in terms of the program, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • make the program more comfortable and approachable to students, especially in a virtual setting

  • market the program to more students, especially to a more diverse population of students

The following recommendation report is going to walk through the research and analysis done by your group of IUPUI writing students, which was used to develop certain recommendations for the IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion to address their current needs.

We conducted a local study and a one-question polling through the use of the IUPUI Facebook groups. We highlighted the data that we found from that as well as a general survey of social media tools that you can utilize to reach more students, include IUPUI Facebook groups and Instagram pages.

Key Findings from Our Local Study and Polling Research

  • 52% to consider participating in a wellness coaching program if they knew one was free for them

Of the students surveyed, there was a need for wellness coaching:

  • 83% would most likely participate in fitness coaching

  • 59% would most likely participate in diet coaching

  • 59% would most likely participate in financial coaching

  • 55% would most likely participate in time management coaching

  • 34% would most likely participate in relationship coaching

  • 23% would most likely participate in sexual health coaching

And for reaching out to IUPUI students:

We decided to conclude the Your First Look page with your brief recommendations. For more information, you can go to the in-depth recommendations by clicking on the underlined section here.

Brief Recommendations For Your Success

  • Utilize the trials and tribulations of the COVID-19 pandemic to show value in the wellness coaching program.

  • Specialize coaching options by shifting focus from relationship and sexual health coaching towards fitness, diet, time management, and financial coaching.

  • Focus on your strengths in your current key demographics to scale the program and reach others, then add use of peer-to-peer marketing to continue to grow.

  • Reach out through your connections to specific groups, such as Graduate Students and the BIPOC community, to market with organizations that regularly contact them to better connect with these communities. Reaching out directly seems to be the best action.

  • Consider working in relatively small groups, which can bolster peer bonding and ease the pressure of a one-on-one meeting.
