About Us

English W231 at IUPUI

Eng-W231: Professional Writing Skills is a higher level course offered in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. There are many sections of this class offered each semester and often have a variety of different, skillful instructors. The course uses an interaction with a local community organization or business to learn and practice professional writing skills. The main project for the course is a recommendation report, which is this website for this project. The class is split into groups who contact local businesses or community organizations to partner with for the duration of the semester. The purpose of the project is for the students to perform research and analysis to create a recommendation report in response to a challenge being faced by the selected community partner. The students then present their research, analysis, and recommendations to these businesses that they think will help the business improve upon the issues that they are having. Throughout the semester, the students are required to complete a composite of the following professional writing pieces:

  • Recommendation Report

  • Local Survey

  • Annotated Bibliography

  • Review of Literature

  • Professional Research 

  • Website Construction
